Gentle Gazzetta Readers, If you can believe it, I’m writing you from my home studio in San Francisco. I’m not on a plane or in a hotel room. I’m not in a dressing room writing between a sound-check and a show. I’m sitting in my own chair, working from my own space, and I’m going to be here for much longer than I’ve stayed in one place, any other time during this entire calendar year! Since January, I've been zig-zagging back and forth between Los Angeles and Baltimore, New York and Santa Cruz, Barcelona and Seattle, Talahassee and Rome. And I must say, after months of being on the road with barely a moment at home and, in some cases, spending almost more time in the air than I spent on the ground, it feels great to be home! starting new projects I was also composing non-stop, while doing all that traveling, but I’m finally going to be able to relax my working pace, if only a little bit. And, more importantly, I’m finally at a point where I can shift the focus of my work to composing things I’ll actually be performing. After a very long bout of composing works for other soloists and ensembles, I’m about to begin work on two separate projects that both involve me as a performer. One of those is a commission from Stenberg | Cahill duo to write a piece for their violin and piano, and my voice & electronics, with interactive projected media. We’ll be premiering that work at the Dresher Ensemble Studio in September, so I'd better get started working on it! The other piece is a continuation of my Rome Prize Fellowship project, which was to be a performance work called Simultaneous that was originally intended to premiere at MoMA, in New York, in Summer of 2020. I finally have the time to focus on that piece, and support from the SF Arts Commission to create a working version of it, which I will mount in December, in Space 124 at Project Artaud, in San Francisco. Then, next summer, I’ll have the opportunity to develop a version of it for the Sound Studio at MoMA. so many premieres... Meanwhile, as a result of my insane amount of musical output just this year alone, I’ve had the honor of many premieres – including a few in some pretty prestigious venues. In January, my Silent H was premiered by Nathalie Joachim and the LA Phil New Music Group at Walt Disney Hall. And, in April, pianist Nadia Shpachenko premiered a new work called Balón in Orange, CA. Then, in May, the Bang On A Can Orchestra, with Denardo Coleman’s Ornette Expressions combo, premiered my arrangement of Lonely Woman (Donna Sola Abandonata...) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House, and Julia Bullock premiered Quilt with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall. In the coming summer months, the Grand Valley New Music Ensemble will be premiering my Spirited Conversation during their National Parks tour. And I have yet more works premiering in the fall. ...so much art... Throughout this very crowded touring and composing schedule, I did manage to see and hear a lot of very inspiring art. I attended as many concerts as I could during Bang On A Can’s LONG PLAY Festival, between my performances and rehearsals. And I attended (some in person and some virtually) all of the Mills College Faultline Festival events. I loved the concerts at both of those festivals.
Laetitia Sonami and Zeena Parkins take a bow at Mills College Legacy Festival	There was an extraordinary rendition of Robert Ashley’s In Sara, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Men And Women performed live by an all-star cast of Paul Demarinis, Laetitia Sonami, John Bischoff, James Fei, and Chris Brown. And then, I had the delightful surprise of seeing Matmos perform Ashley’s “The Back Yard” from Perfect Lives, at Roulette in New York, as part of LONG PLAY.
I also hit the Whitney Biennale, while I was in New York, and did a quick stroll through the galleries in Chelsea, and visited the collection at MoMA as well. And, while serving as a guest artist at both Nief Norf and the Next Festival, I not only heard some of my own chamber works played, but I attended all of the “fellows’ concerts”. I was delighted by the breadth of great work by emerging composers and the astounding virtuosity of young performers. And I was honored to hear them interpreting my work – including a string orchestra arrangment of Carbon Song Cycle at NextFest. ...and so little time Now that I’m back in my studio, I’ll try to take a deep breath and pause for just a moment, but I’ll very quickly be launching into all the new work I have cut out for me. And, I do have a few live events scheduled including Garden of Memory, the annual Summer Solstice walk-through concert at Oakland’s Chapel of the Chimes. (Scroll down for the deets.) But, at least for the balance of the summer, these things will all be local Bay Area events. Thankfully, I won’t be getting on another plane until the summer’s through! Love, PZ

Garden of Memory annual Summer Solstice Event at Chapel of the Chimes
