PRIZES AND HONORS AND SHOWS, OH MY!

Gentle Gazzetta Readers,

Winter persists. It’s been frightfully cold in San Francisco, and even colder in all the locations I’ve been visiting. And, as the world keeps spinning out its political madness and technological absurdities, I just keep zipping back and forth across the country, the continent, and the globe. This continues to be a busy and very fruitful time for me, peppered with bountiful surprises.

During these early months of 2023, I’ve already had three visiting artist residencies (in Quebec, Florida, and Utah), and I’ve completed the first of a series of trips to Cambridge for my MIT McDermott Award residency in Massachusetts. And, amidst all this, I’ve just been informed that I was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and will be inducted as a new member at a ceremony in May. I feel tremendously honored and beyond grateful for being bestowed with such an embarrassment of riches.

Party like it's 2019
In all my travels, I’m finding myself increasingly surrounded by people who are operating as if the pandemic is history. I often seem to be the only person still wearing a mask or making any effort to keep a bit of distance. I’m doing my best to adapt to these new behaviors, but my instinct is to remain cautious. And, fortunately, I’ve managed to make it to this point without ever testing positive. I’ve also had no colds or flu for some time, but I fear that’s likely to change soon.

Premieres and performances galore
After all the commissions and composing I’ve been telling you about, I’ve had a number of recent premieres of new work, and many more are coming up.

Donald Swearingen photograhing work at Catharine Clark Gallery

In September Kate Stenberg, Sarah Cahill, and I premiered Presence, the violin/piano/voice & electronics trio they commissioned me to write. (We’ll perform it again at MIT next month.) In November, Volti premiered the live-in-person version of my chamber chorus & media work, Ink. And December brought the premiere of Simultaneous, the performance and installation piece that I started during my truncated Rome Prize Fellowship year. (I’ll be mounting a fuller version of that at MoMA in New York, this summer.) Then, in January, I premiered my arrangement of the Residents' The Car Thief, in a concert celebration of the groups 50th anniversary directed by John Sanborn at the San Francisco Conservatory.

I’m also having several other works for soloists or chamber ensembles premiering in the coming weeks, including the New York premiere of Thank You So Much, composed for pianist Adam Tendler. Read on or scroll down for details on some of those events.

Art also persists
Among the many very stirring concerts and exhibitions I attended, since the previous Gazzetta, was a charming evening of works by Luciano Chessa, performed by the composer (on piano) and cellist Francis Marie Uitti (with her extraordinary two-bow technique) at the Mosswood Sound Series in Oakland. Luciano also gave an amazing performance at SFEMF, which we presented at the LAB in September. And the latest installment of the Other Minds Festival, at the Great Star Theater in Chinatown, was filled with powerful works each night.

I also saw an exciting performance of Marcos Balter’s Pan by Claire Chase and a formidable chorus of community performers and members of San Francisco Symphony in the SoundBox space. And I attended a delightful shared evening by Dina Emerson/Skullkrusher duo and the inimitable percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani. And, on the visual art front, I was fortunate to be in Montréal while the Musée des Beaux-arts was showing a Basquiat exhibition, and in Los Angeles during a William Kentridge show at the Broad. Equally delightful was a shared exhibition at Catharine Clark Gallery with works by Amy Trachtenberg and Lenka Clayton & Phillip Andrew Lewis. I always draw tremendous inspiration from seeing such work. It feeds me.

I hope to see you at some of my upcoming events…

Love as always,

PZ

Adam Tendler: INHERITANCES
(Tendler plays Pamela Z's Thank You So Much)

Saturday, March 11, 2023, 7:30pm
92nd Street Y (92NY)

Pamela Z, Kate Stenberg, & Sarah Cahill

After his father’s unexpected death, acclaimed New York-based pianist Adam Tendler used his inheritance – a wad of cash received in a parking lot – to begin a commissioning project, inviting some of today’s most influential composers and sound artists to create new piano works exploring the idea of inheritance itself. Woven into an intimate program, these pieces tell a universal story of lineage, loss, and place, and result in a meditation on confronting our past while moving toward the future.

The New York premiere of Inheritance features works by Laurie Anderson, Nico Muhly, Missy Mazzoli, Devonté Hynes, inti figgis-vizueta, Pamela Z, Ted Hearne, Angélica Negrón, Christopher Cerrone, Marcos Balter, Darian Donovan Thomas, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Scott Wollschleger, Mary Prescott, Timo Andres and John Glover.
