Gentle Gazzetta Readers, I’m writing you from an altitude of 30,000 feet – having just made my bi-annual pilgrimage to Venice to take in La Biennale, directly after giving performances at Fylkingen in Stockholm, which boasts to be the world’s oldest presenter of text-sound composition. This trip marks a full-throated return to the frenetic touring and performing schedule that has become my norm, after a brief few months of relative stillness. Highs and Lows Even though I stayed put throughout mid-late summer, I remained quite busy in my San Francisco studio and my local neighborhood – preparing for and giving a concert on the BAMPFA Full series, performing at the annual Garden of Memory event, attending a number of local concerts, and shooting video and composing new music for the upcoming violin, piano, voice & electronics work that will be performed later this month.     This past season has been somewhat emotionally charged for me with both highs and lows – including the marital union of some dear friends and the loss of my 24-year-old Honda Civic hatchback, Yoko, who was finally stolen one-too-many times right before I left on this trip. Ironically, she was photographed – sporting her CAGE433 plates – by three different friends, and posted to social media, right before her final disappearance. I mourn the loss of her! Art, art, and more art... In Stockholm, I was floored by the breadth of work presented at Fylkingen. I was in such amazingly briliant company with performances by the inimitable Jaap Blonk, the fierce (and tender) Tomomi Adachi, the queen of text-sound opera Anne Pajunen, and a startling text-sound quartet led by Jaan Malin. And I was introduced to the exquisite work of a new friend, Maja Jantar, who also accompanied me to Stockholm's Moderna Museet, where we saw galleries full of great works. Then, I went on to Venice, for the current edition of La Biennale di Venezia (now occurring in an even-numbered year – due to pandemic postponements), which was nothing short of spectacular. The US pavilion was populated with the stunning work of Golden Lion winner Simone Leigh, who also opened the Arsenale exhibition with her monumental sculpture, Brick House. Countless works stood out for me at both of the main sites – including Dumb Type’s layered sound and light treatment of the Japanese pavilion, Cecila Vicuña’s surrealist paintings in the Central Pavilion, and Vladmir Nicolic’s immersive Camminare con l’Acqua, in the Serbian. Many works subverted or reimagined the architecture of the exhibition spaces – notably Ignasi Aballé’s architectural “correction” of the Spanish Pavilion, and Delcy Morelos’ soil labyrinth that enveloped the Arsenale floor and stairs – surrounding spectators with 4’ high masses of earth. Sandra enveloped in Walking With Water at the Arsenale in Venice
On this year’s Venice visit, I was accompanied by my dear friend, filmmaker Sandra Davis. Although we squeezed everything into just two days, we managed to make it through both of the main exhibition sites (Giardini and Arsenale) and still fit in an afternoon stop at the Peggy Guggenheim. Then, as we approached the Accademia vaporetto stop, we came across an Anish Kapoor exhibition, and we popped in there as well.
Photography cannot capture the deep infinate void of "Kapoor Black".	The work was strong and, even though I find it deplorable that he has taken an exclusive patent on the newly developed, darkest black pigment, I found the work he did with it to be among the strongest in that show.
It was the final exhibition we attended before departing Venice, and it will likely stick with me for some time. Returning for more... And now I’m returning Stateside to perform in New York on an Issue Project Room program, and then back to the Bay Area to help present the 21st Annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, and give the premiere performance of Presence, my newly commissioned work for Stenberg | Cahill Duo. Following that, my fall will remain in constant motion with, among other things, an Atlantic Arts Center residency, a live performance version of Ink, my chamber-chorus work for Volti, and the premiere of my performance work Simultaneous – re-ignited from my truncated Rome Prize project. Pamela Z with Stenberg | Cahill Duo in PRESENCE Saturday, September 24, 2022, 7:30pm Dresher Ensemble Studio, Oakland Stenberg | Cahill Duo will be joined by composer/performer Pamela Z in the performance of the world premiere of Presence at The Dresher Ensemble Studio at 7:30pm in Oakland, CA, USA Presence, Pamela Z’s new work for violin/piano duo, voice & electronics, and video, will have its world premiere on a program alongside works by Somei Satoh and Roscoe Mitchell. Commissioned by Stenberg | Cahill Duo, the new work explores presence in its many senses – physical, incorporeal, demeanor, carriage, presence of mind – working with the three women’s physical forms, focus and stage presence. Gesture, facial expression, and physical attitude are incorporated into the score – making use of silence, slow deliberate actions, imitation, and unisons to fill the space with the ever-changing intensity of imposing, dignified, fleeting, insistent, and comforting presence. The work employs gesture-controlled MIDI instruments, and the performers’ movements manipulate interjections of sampled audio and video projections. The acoustic instrument sounds are layered and processed in real time to create music that is sometimes open and minimal and sometimes densely layered and timbrally complex. The San Francisco Bay Area chamber chorus, Volti, presents the in-person premiere of Pamela Z's Ink. Volti at ODC Theater 3153 17th St, San Francisco, CA 94110   top	Ink is a work that unfolds in five sonically distinct movements that variously use standard notation, graphic elements, instructions, and rote transmission of sung and spoken vocal material. Speech fragments from interviews with the Volti singers make up a portion of the sonic structure and determine some of the work’s melodic and rhythmic passages. The piece premiered as a streaming video work, designed specifically for the web, on April 24, 2021. This concert will include a re-vamped, live version, as the start of the 2022-2023 season, performed by Volti under the baton of Valerie St. Agathe.

Pamela Z presents “Simultaneous”, an intermedia performance work exploring the concept of simultaneity, through voice, electronic processing, chamber ensemble (English horn, viola, cello, and percussion), speech samples, gesture control, and projected video. This work is the culmination Z’s Rome Prize project which began in 2019, has had iterations in the forms of a multi-channel sound installation and a fixed media radio work, but stopped short of being presented as a performance work, because of the pandemic’s interruption of her fellowship year.
