FREE TO MOVE ABOUT...

Gentle Gazzetta Readers,

It was only a matter of time but I’m traveling again – full bore. Throughout last year, as we were crossing our fingers that this plague would eventually wind down, I did venture out on several occasions – to the East Coast and even, at one point, to Europe. But, for the most part, I stayed pretty consistently at home in San Francisco. But that ends now. I’m at the beginning of the longest touring bout I’ve been on in a very long time.

l'inizio del viaggio

I’m writing you from a hotel room near the campus of Florida State University, where I’m actively engaged in their Festival of New Music. And, directly after this, I’ll head to Austin for a visiting artist residency at UT’s College of Fine Arts, and then yet another in Baton Rouge, at LSU’s Experimental Music & Digital Media Center. And, from there, I head back to Rome!

I’ll Spend five and a half short weeks there, trying to make up for a fraction of my lost Rome Prize time, and I’m certain that those weeks will fly by "in un batter d’occhio”. Although I’ll return from Roma to my San Francisco studio for a brief moment, I’ll almost instantly turn around and head back out the door (with wild abandon), for far flung US locales, stopping back home only briefly, in between them, until I’ve consumed Spring in its entirety. Only then, will I finally slow down a bit and try to get in some quality studio time.

hard work and its rewards

Meanwhile, I had a very active and productive time from fall to winter, bookended by performances in two extraordinarily beautiful and architecturally bold venues – the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

At the Elbphilharmonie, I performed solo works for voice and electronics on a shared concert with ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble), who played my Attention on that program. And at Disney Hall, Nathalie Joachim and I curated an evening of works that included the premieres of commissions for both of us, performed with the LA Phil New Music Group. I also did two record release concerts – one in New York and one in San Francisco – celebrating my two 2021 solo albums.

And, in the midst of all of this, I've received some prestigious awards. In December of 2021, the Third Coast International Festival of Audio gave me the AUDIO UNBOUND award for my radio work Simultaneous. Then, in January, the Foundation for Contemporary Arts honored me with the 2022 Dorothea Tanning Award in Music/Sound.

hearing...and seeing

I composed a ridiculous number of new chamber works and, as is my usual, I saw (and heard) a fair amount of art, since my last writing – partially online, partially in-person, and largely very engaging. I saw Splinter Reeds (my favorite reed quintet) in a beautiful performance of Amadeus Regucera’s Absence in Relief, at the Paul Dresher Ensemble Studio.

And I attended Meredith Monk’s Indra’s Net in Oakland, at Mills College’s Littlefield Concert Hall, and a Theo Bleckman concert at San Francisco’s Herbst Theater. I also saw all the 2021 Other Minds Festival concerts – through the lens of live-stream co-host alongside the indefatigable Charles Amirkhanian. I attended some experimental sound events at Center For New Music in San Francisco, and enjoyed performances by Rome Prize alumni at the Society of Fellows' "Salone" at Roulette in New York.

On the visual art front, I saw the enchanting Joan Mitchell retrospective at SFMOMA, and an extraordinary Jennifer Packer exhibition at the Whitney.

And I attended several of the monthly art openings in the newly designated 3rd Floor Exhibition Space at DE (the artist building where I live and work).

I know I’ll have many more opportunities to experience good art during my current travels, and I’m taking great care to avoid contracting the virus, as I go. I hope you’re all safe and well, and I hope to maybe catch a glimpse of your masked faces during my upcoming events! (Scroll down for details.)

Love,

PZ
