RELEASE RELEASE RELEASE...

Gentle Gazzetta Readers,

Can we all agree this has been a strange year? Just when we thought 2020 took the prize, 2021 has managed to confound us in subtler and more elaborate ways – taking us down a treacherously uneven road that seems to lead toward a return to “normalcy” but then takes hairpin curves back toward danger and restriction, with plenty of political insanity, climate crises, and social upheaval along the way.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve also begun inching your way back into some social interaction – sharing meals in “parklets” or on patios, and seeing art exhibitions and performances with limited audiences in masks. I’ve even been traveling to participate in and attend live, in-person engagements. But, mostly, I’ve been getting a lot of work done in my studio, and I’m happy to report about some of the fruits of that labor.

New Releases!
This year, after a decade and a half of recording drought, I have not one, but two solo album releases – plus, a recording of one of my string quartets. In June, Neuma Records released my new album A Secret Code on CD as well as on streaming and download platforms. On November 5th, the Freedom to Spend label is re-issuing my 1988 album Echolocation – and on vinyl, no less! And, last month, Apollo Chamber Players released an album called “With Malice Toward None” that includes my four-movement work, The Unraveling. I’m in very good company on that CD, with other wonderful composers including Eve Beglarian.

All three releases are available for online purchase in physical and digital formats. Or, if you’re in the Bay Area, you can pick up your copies at a limited-capacity album release concert in December. (See this for the deets.)

More new work...
Since I last wrote you, I’ve completed several new works, including a multi-channel fixed-media sound work called Sonant Topography. In August, I had the pleasure of showing that work in a shared exhibition of spatialized sound with Miya Masaoka, Bora Yoon, and Nina Young, as part of the Time:SPANS Festival, at the DiMenna Music Center in New York. Commissioned and co-presented by EMPAC, all four of us composed fixed media works for their Wave Field Synthesis Loudspeaker Array – which allowed us to position sounds in very specific locations throughout the hall. The audiences (which were limited to 25 at a time) could experience the works from stationary seated positions, or wandering about among the sounds, in the room.

I’ve also recently completed short chamber works for Eighth Blackbird, Del Sol Quartet, and pianist Sugar Vendil. And I’m now making headway on commissioned works for soprano Julia Bullock (with members of the San Francisco Symphony), and pianist Nadia Shpachenko. And, I’m very excited about getting started on a work for Nathalie Joachim with the LA Phil New Music Group, and learning the piece that Nathalie is composing for me. These will both be premiered at Disney Hall, in January, on a concert that Nathalie and I co-curated.

Traveling again!
This summer, I made my first voyages since my March 2020 return from Rome. In June, I did a short visiting artist residency in Pennsylvania, with Haverford College’s summer DocuLab program, and spent most of August in New York, mounting and presenting my sound installation, and attending all the other concerts on the Time:SPANS Festival. And now I'm headed for Germany to perform, and to have my string quartet, Attention, performed by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble, on Max Richter’s Reflektor Festival, at the Elbphilharmonie.

Next month, I’ll be back to New York for a performance at Roulette, as part of the Society of Fellows of the American Academy in Rome’s SALONE. And the first quarter of 2022 holds many more journeys, including a return to Rome for a small taste of my truncated Rome Prize Fellowship. After more than a year of staying in one place, it seems strange to be back to my usual dense traveling schedule, but I must confess that I’ve really missed it.

Seeing Art (in person)
I’ve also missed my habitual frequent attendance of concerts and art exhibitions. So it’s been a delight to be physically present for all the work I’ve recently had the pleasure of seeing. I attended eleven exceptional concerts of contemporary music in New York, visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art and attended a performance installation by Tiona Nekkia McClodden with Courtney Bryan in Philly, saw gallery exhibitions featuring work by John Sanborn, Amy Trachtenberg, Ramekon O’Arwisters, and Amy X Neuburg, in San Francisco, and saw ODC Dance at a gala in Petaluma.

Even though we have to be masked and keep our distance, there’s nothing like the feeling of experiencing art in person, and in the presence of others.

As you gently approach these in-person events and reacquaint yourself with live, non-virtual gatherings, let me offer you some possible morsels to choose from. (Scroll down for details.) Maybe I’ll see you at some of these, and recognize you smizing from behind your mask!

Love,

PZ

From the Reflektor Max Richter & Yulia Mahr website:
"Complex yet catchy, intricately structured yet atmospheric and emotional: the works of Caroline Shaw, Caleb Burhans and Pamela Z are fascinating and enchanting. Exploring the traditional genre of the string quartet from new angles, they are challenging, hypnotic and calming at the same time. The great minimal music pioneer Steve Reich affectionately calls this generation of US composers his »grandchildren«."
