Gentle Gazzetta Readers, With a great deal of (possibly misguided) hopefulness, we are all beginning to step out again – one toe at a time – aren't we? Our first meal out? Our first live performance or gallery exhibition? Our first maskless visit with a friend? Fully vaxed, I, for one, am keen to start remembering how to wear clothes again and how to be face-to-face with 3-dimensional people! Face to Screen Meanwhile, I dare say, I’ve grown accustomed to regarding my countless face-to-screen interactions as social “outings”. And, I’ve definitely gotten a lot of work made during these relentless months of solitude. Since my last writing, I completed and premiered a new virtual chorus work called Ink, commissioned by the Bay Area chamber chorus, Volti. I’ve finished my latest (and first since 2004) solo album, A Secret Code, which is slated for an official June release on Neuma Records. I’ve signed a publishing agreement with C.F. Peters for one of my chamber works, Attention (which was commissioned by Del Sol Quartet in 2016). Stepping out... I recently attended my first – in over a year – live, in-person event. I went to Catharine Clark Gallery to see Catherine Galasso’s Dances for Doing – a site-specific work made in response to Jen Bervin’s exhibition Doing and Undoing. After having having a look at Jen’s engaging installation, the audience sat in spaced chairs watching the dance through the floor-to-ceiling lobby windows. It was thrilling (if a bit unnerving) to be with a group of strangers while taking in new pieces by two artists whose work I adore. I really do look forward to my next outing (which will be a trip to SFMOMA for the Nam June Paik retrospective). ...and staying in I’ve also done a fair amount of art-seeing from the comfort of my computer chair, where I’ve spent an alarming percentage of my time in the past year. Bang On A Can continues to keep contemporary music composers and performers in work with frequent online marathons. The most recent ones have included newly commissioned works from artists like Joan La Barbara, Miya Masaoka, Tomeka Reid, Moor Mother, Joel Thompson, and Bora Yoon. I’ve also seen some truly exceptional concerts presented by Cal Performances and SF Performances featuring the likes of Theo Bleckmann and Jeremy Denk. Mills College – our beloved Mills – has been busily presenting exciting work on the Mills Music Now series and on end-of-the year student composer and ensemble showcases. And I’ve attended online performances of my work, Twenty Answers, by two different chamber ensembles (Alinéa Ensemble and Five by Five), this past season. From this very chair, I’ve given artist talks and visits to music schools and art departments including Stanford, NYU, Yale, Princeton, Concordia, Leeds, Maryland, Austin, and Juilliard.

In the coming months, I’ll continue working in my studio to complete several outstanding commissioned works, but I also have some actual travel plans. I’ll be in New York, this summer, for an exhibition of a my new 3-D sound work at the Time:Spans Festival, as part of my EMPAC residency. And, hopefully, in Hamburg for the Reflektor Festival at Elbphilharmonie, in the fall. Here’s hoping that, by then, we can all jump in with both feet, and the water will be fine! Pamela Z's new album A SECRET CODE SLATED FOR RELEASE ON NEUMA RECORDS Friday, June 18, 2021
On Friday, June 18, 2021, Neuma Records will release A Secret Code, Pamela Z's new, long-awaited solo CD. Her first solo album since the 2004 Starkland release (A Delay is Better), A Secret Code is a collection of works spanning two decades – including studio recordings of works from Z's solo concert repertoire, fixed media works, and songs excerpted from dance scores and full evening performance works. 	Premiered on April 24th, Pamela Z's Ink, remains available to be viewed online. Ink unfolds in five sonically distinct movements that variously use standard notation, graphic elements, instructions, and rote transmission of sung and spoken vocal material. Speech fragments from interviews with the Volti singers make up a portion of the sonic structure and determine some of the work's melodic and rhythmic passages.

DEUTSCHLAND RADIO presents Pamela Z SIMULTANEOUS a soundwork on the phenomenon of simultaneity (archived online) Pamela Z’s radiowork Simultaneous, which had its broadcast premiere in December of 2020, is now archived here for streaming at your convenience. Simultaneous (duration: 44’33”) is a sound work exploring many facets of the concept of simultaneity. The work, which makes use of voice – both as speech sounds and singing, was developed, in large part, during Ms. Z's fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. The piece features the sampled speaking voices of 2019/20 Rome Prize Fellows, visiting artists and scholars, and some residents and staff, as well as a few voices recorded outside of Rome.
